Pandharpur – The Spiritual Capital of Maharashtra
Pandharpur is one of Maharashtra's most sacred pilgrimage
destinations and is often called the "Kashi of South India."
Located on the banks of the Chandrabhaga River in the district of Pandharpur,
it is home to the famous Shri Vitthal Rukmini Mandir.
Every year, millions of devotees visit Pandharpur to seek
blessings from Lord Vitthal (Vithoba), a beloved form of Lord Krishna/Vishnu,
and Goddess Rukmini. The town becomes especially vibrant during Ashadhi and
Kartiki Ekadashi when the famous Wari pilgrimage reaches Pandharpur.

History of Pandharpur
Pandharpur has a history spanning more than a thousand
years. Ancient inscriptions indicate that the temple existed as early as the
12th century.
The town gained prominence through the Bhakti movement led
by saints such as:
- Sant Dnyaneshwar
- Sant Tukaram
- Sant Namdev
- Sant Eknath
- Sant Chokhamela
These saints spread devotion to Lord Vitthal through Abhangs
(devotional songs), making Pandharpur one of India's most important pilgrimage
centers.
Story of Lord Vitthal and Rukmini
According to legend, a devoted son named Pundalik
served his parents with complete dedication.
Lord Krishna and Goddess Rukmini came to bless him. Since
Pundalik was busy serving his parents, he threw a brick (Vit) and requested the
Lord to wait. Lord Krishna stood on the brick with hands on his waist.
This standing form became known as Vithoba or Vitthal,
while Goddess Rukmini's shrine was established nearby.
The name "Pandharpur" is believed to have
originated from "Pandurang," another name of Lord Vitthal.

The Origins and Spiritual Significance
The tradition of walking to Pandharpur to seek the blessings
of Lord Vitthal dates back over 800 years. It was heavily shaped by the great
Maharashtrian saints (Sants) of the Varkari sect—most notably Sant Dnyaneshwar,
Sant Tukaram, Sant Namdev, and Sant Eknath.
The core significance of the Wari lies in its absolute
equality. In a historically stratified society, the Wari was a
revolutionary equalizer. During the 21-day pilgrimage, caste, wealth, and
social status are left behind. Everyone dresses in simple white clothing, eats
together, and addresses each other as Mauli (mother), acknowledging the divine
presence in every individual.
The journey is an endurance test made joyful by the continuous singing of Abhangas (devotional poetry) to the rhythm of the taal (cymbals) and mridangam (drums).

The Modern Palkhi Tradition
While the saints themselves walked to Pandharpur during their lifetimes, the modern tradition of carrying their Padukas (symbolic silver footwear) in a Palkhi (palanquin) was formalized in the 1830s by Haibatravbaba Arphalkar, a courtier of the Scindias of Gwalior and a devout follower of Sant Dnyaneshwar.
